Biopharmaceutical company UCB and software company Dearhealth today announced a partnership to improve care delivery for patients with epilepsy.

The companies will focus on improving patient experiences and outcomes by reducing medical costs with a software system built to empower value-based disease management. The software is powered through artificial intelligence care pathways and integrated in the electronic health record (EHR).

When patients are onboarded, their care pathway is risk-adjusted using evidence-based feature sets and machine learning to navigate around disease health risks.

“Tools like Dearhealth incorporate valuable educational and support materials into the (EHR) where they can be accessed by the clinician as part of a comprehensive patient care dialogue,” said Mike Davis, head of the U.S. Neurology Patient Value Unit at UCB. “This has the potential to change the way that patients and healthcare providers interact and encourage patients and their caregivers to play a more informed role in their treatment.”

Dearhealth boasts that its software has led to a 79% decrease in hospitalizations, a 69% reduction of emergency department visits and a 47% reduction of relapse rate.

The platform is being piloted for epilepsy to optimize care coordination within Dearhealth smart epilepsy care pathways. These are automatically risk-adjusted and allow patients to share information with their providers to get more precise, rapid and personalized treatments. Dearhealth will leverage UCB’s knowledge of the journey for patients with epilepsy and leadership in research to develop patient-focused solutions to be integrated with the patient EHR.

UCLA’s Seizure Disorder Center will further test the software.

“We couldn’t be more excited to partner with UCB at a time where care is transforming so rapidly,” said Daniel Hommes, M.D., Ph.D., CEO of Dearhealth. “Dearhealth is collaborating with companies like UCB to share disease-specific knowledge and expertise in order to maximize value for patients and in epilepsy care.
