CHRISTUS Health has announced plans to build a new hospital in Beaumont, Texas. It will be built at the former Medical Center of Southeast Texas - Victory Campus, which closed in February.

The nonprofit Catholic system says it is building a new hospital in the Beaumont area. The system says the hospital is slated to open next year.

The new hospital hospital will be built at the former Medical Center of Southeast Texas - Victory Campus in West Beaumont.

Ernie Sadau, president and chief executive officer of CHRISTUS Health, said in a statement that the area demonstrates a need for another hospital in Beaumont, a city of 115,000 near the Louisiana border.

“As health care needs grow in Southeast Texas and beyond, we continue to expand our services to ensure that area residents have access to the innovative, faith-based care they have come to expect and deserve,” Sadau said in a statement. “We know consumers have choices as to where they seek care, and finding care close to home is ideal.”

CHRISTUS Health has outlined plans for a campus of nearly six acres. The hospital will have an emergency room, surgical space and medical office space. The system also pledges to bring a full range of orthopedic care and the latest in robotic surgery.

Paul Trevino, chief executive officer of CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Health System, said he looks forward to meeting the area’s needs for more healthcare services and continuing the organization’s “healing mission.”

“We know that residents in Beaumont, Port Arthur and surrounding communities want to access our health system and the exceptional care we provide,” Trevino said in a statement.

The former Medical Center of Southeast Texas' Beaumont campus was formerly owned by Steward Health Care, but the hospital closed in February 2024. Steward cited a lack of use in closing the facility, KBMT-TV reported. Steward, the for-profit system based in Dallas, filed for bankruptcy in the spring and is selling its hospitals.

CHRISTUS Health operates more than 60 hospitals in Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Chile, Colombia and Mexico.
