AdventHealth has acquired ShorePoint Health Port Charlotte, a 254-bed hospital in Port Charlotte, Florida.

This week, AdventHealth completed its $260 million purchase of the ShorePoint Health System from Community Health Systems, Inc. AdventHealth acquires ShorePoint Health Port Charlotte, a 254-bed hospital in Port Charlotte, Florida, along with a number of clinics and outpatient facilities.

The facility is being renamed AdventHealth Port Charlotte.

Terry Shaw, president and CEO of AdventHealth, said he was glad to add the hospital to the system.

“We are honored to bring AdventHealth’s unique brand of whole-person care to Port Charlotte and are thankful to partner with the team members, physicians, patients and residents of this community to deliver exceptional care for the body, mind and spirit,” Shaw said in a statement.

AdventHealth and CHS first announced a definitive agreement in November 2024, and they completed the transaction March 1.

The agreement also includes ShorePoint Health Punta Gorda, a hospital that CHS closed following damage from Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton.

AdventHealth says it plans to work with the Punta Gorda community to understand what services are needed.

David Ottati, president and CEO for AdventHealth West Florida, praised ShorePoint’s staff.

“AdventHealth is thrilled to welcome the talented and resilient teams at ShorePoint Health into our integrated health network, building on their strong legacy of serving the Charlotte County community,” Ottati said in a statement.

Adam Johnson has been named the new president and CEO of AdventHealth Port Charlotte. He most recently served as chief operating officer for AdventHealth Ocala.

Johnson said he’s “honored and humbled” to take the new role.

“There is an amazing group of team members and providers in place, and it is exciting to have them join the AdventHealth team and culture,” Johnson said in a statement.

Based in Altamonte Springs, Florida, AdventHealth operates 55 hospitals in nine states and boasts $17.9 billion in revenue.

CHS has been shedding some of its hospitals in recent years, and announced plans to sell Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in North Carolina to Duke Health. The for-profit chain based in Tennessee now operates 73 hospitals in 15 states.

AdventHealth has been growing of late. Last fall, the health system completed its acquisition of St. Luke's Hospital, a critical access hospital in Columbus, North Carolina. AdventHealth completed a deal even amidst the devastation of flooding in western North Carolina from the remnants of Hurricane Helene.
