Centra Health appoints a CEO, a longtime Maryland health leader is retiring, and more.
Wayne A. I. Frederick, MD, has been appointed the interim chief executive officer of the American Cancer Society and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network.
Frederick will take on his new responsibilities beginning Nov. 2.
A surgical oncologist, Frederick is president emeritus of Howard University. He served as Howard’s president from 2014 to 2023. He was recently named the Charles R. Drew Professor of Surgery at the Howard University College of Medicine.
Frederick has also been a member of the American Cancer Society’s board since 2022, but he has stepped away from the board as he takes on his new role as interim CEO.
He follows Karen E. Knudsen, who served as the CEO of the American Cancer Society for three years before recently announcing her plans to step down. She will serve as an executive strategic adviser until early 2025.
“I am deeply honored to join ACS and ACS CAN in this capacity as interim CEO and continue our work to end cancer as we know it, for everyone,” Frederick said in a statement.
“I look forward to working full-time with the incredible teams at ACS and ACS CAN, and more than a million volunteers across the country, to advance our shared goals of increasing access to care, reducing cancer disparities and improving the lives of patients and their families.”
