Voice-based technology developer Sonde Health, an affiliate of PureTech Health, today announced a $16 million Series A funding round to expand its platform across multiple health conditions and device types.

The funding includes the issuance of $6 million in shares upon conversion of debt into inquiry.

Boston-based Sonde offers a platform that monitors and diagnosis physical and mental medical conditions. The technology is designed to enable consumers to use devices such as smartphones and smart speakers for disease screening and management solutions based on the acoustic analysis of seconds of voice.

The technology measures changes in pitch, hoarseness, rate of speech and other metrics that are difficult to perceive by most listeners and uses the biomarkers to assess health.

The platform has the potential to promote wellness and improve the timing and selection of a range of therapeutic interventions. The technology could help the prevention and treatment of conditions ranging from depression and respiratory diseases to chronic diseases of aging.

“Our longstanding vision has been to harness the health information present in billions of voice interactions to create a 21st century thermometer, or ‘vocometer,’ that provides broad digital healthcare decision support needed to enable new models of precision and preventative medicine,” said Jim Harper, co-founder and chief operating officer of Sonde Health.

Harper said that the financing will allow Sonde Health to accelerate the development of the technology and help deliver the positive impact it can have on an individual’s health and the healthcare system.

The company also plans to use the funding for commercialization activities.

Funding was led by M Ventures, with additional investments from MP Healthcare Venture Management, Neoteny 4, LP, Canepa Healthcare and founder PureTech Health.
