MercyOne announces new CEO | MED MOVES

Hospitals in North Carolina and New Mexico are also getting new leadership.

Robert Baxter has been named the next president and chief executive officer of MercyOne in Iowa.

MercyOne operates 16 medical centers and more than 200 other healthcare sites, and the system employs more than 20,000 people. The system is part of Trinity Health, based in Livonia, Michigan.

Baxter will begin in his new role on June 22. He will succeed Michael Taylor, who has served as interim CEO since January.

Baxter has spent more than three decades in the healthcare industry. Most recently, he has served as president of Bon Secours Mercy Health’s Toledo market.

Rob Casalou, executive vice president and associate chief operating officer for Trinity Health, touted Baxter’s credentials.

“Bob brings the right combination of leadership and operational expertise which will allow us to build on the progress already underway while driving toward our goals for growth and long-term sustainability in our MercyOne communities,” Casalou said in a statement.

Wilson Medical Center announces next CEO

Jason Kimbrell has been named the next chief executive officer of Wilson Medical Center, a Duke Lifepoint hospital in North Carolina.

Kimbrell will begin his new post on June 1. He possesses more than 20 years of healthcare leadership experience. He said he looks forward to listening and learning as he seeks to build relationships.

“What stood out to me throughout this process was the dedication of the people serving this hospital and community,” Kimbrell said in a news release. “Healthcare is deeply personal, and I believe strong hospitals are built through trust, teamwork and a shared commitment to serving people well every day.”

Kimbrell previously served as CEO of HCA Florida Palms West Hospital for more than four years. He also previously served as CEO of HCA Florida Highlands Hospital.

New Mexico hospital gets new CEO

Michael H. Covert has been appointed as the next chief executive officer of Los Alamos Medical Center, a Lifepoint Health hospital in New Mexico.

Covert will take over as CEO on June 15. Covert recently served as chief operations officer at Northeast Georgia Health System, which operates five hospitals.

He has also held leadership roles at CHI St. Luke’s Health System in Texas, Palomar Health in California, Washington Hospital Center, and Sarasota Memorial Health System.

Linda Daly, chair of the Los Alamos Medical Center board of trustees, praised Covert’s “operational acumen.”

“Michael is a seasoned healthcare leader whose career reflects a deep commitment to patients, caregivers, physicians, and the communities his hospitals have served,” Daly said in a statement.

Covert succeeds Bob Singletary, who has been serving as interim CEO since March.

Dana Farber Cancer Institute names top finance officer

Ivan Samstein has been named executive vice president and chief finance and business strategy officer at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Samstein will begin serving in the new position on September 8. The institute announced his hiring last week.

He currently serves as enterprise chief financial officer of University of Chicago Medicine and the University of Chicago. He also previously served as director in public binance for Bank of America Merrill Lynch and assistant vice president for public finance at Moody’s Investors Service.

Dr. Benjamin L. Ebert, president and CEO of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, said he’s the right choice to lead strategic planning at a transformative time.

“In this dynamic period of growth and transformation for Dana-Farber, I am confident Ivan’s leadership, expertise and experience will help ensure we meet our ambitious goals and continue advancing our mission to reduce the burden of cancer,” Ebert said in a statement.
