Health systems affected by global Microsoft outage limit patient care

On Thursday, a global outage of Microsoft software affected some health systems in the United States, which announced they were canceling some procedures or only taking urgent care visits.

A widespread outage that has taken down computer systems worldwide and grounded flights is also impacting health systems.

As of 10 am EDT on Friday, Geisinger Health System’s website was unavailable and could only offer a link to MyChart for patients and various phone numbers.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center ensured patients that it had procedures in place to continue providing safe and high-quality care, but they were pausing any procedures that required anesthesia.

Mass General Brigham had an announcement on its website that all non-urgent visits at its hospitals and clinics were canceled on Friday and that care team members were reaching out to help reschedule.

On Cleveland Clinic’s website there was a note at the top that it was actually offline and visitors were seeing a snapshot of the page using the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine.

However, there were still many health systems in the US that were unaffected and operating as normal.
